Personal responsibility for disaster survival and recovery can be augmented by the professionals at McHenry County Emergency Management. The county takes seriously its many roles in preparing for the next disaster – the first among them being helping residents get ready. We are advised by our federal partners (FEMA): “The likelihood that you and your family will recover from an emergency tomorrow often depends on the planning and preparation done today. While each person’s abilities and needs are unique, every individual can take steps to prepare for all kinds of emergencies. By evaluating your own personal needs and making an emergency plan that fits those needs, you and your loved ones can be better prepared.”

Our generic guidance is:

1. Be Informed – What perils do we face?

2. Make a Plan – How do we avoid the perils? Or if that is not possible, how do we survive with minimal disruption to our lives? Are county and/or village resources available to assist you?

3. Build a kit – Seniors should keep specialized items ready, including extra wheelchair batteries, oxygen, catheters, medica tion, food for service animals and any other items you might need. This would be in addition to basic items like some non perishable food and water.

4. Get Involved – Opportunities abound for seniors to assist others prior to or during a disaster – just give us a ring or review the McHenry County United Way volunteer listings.
