PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

As we age, we prepare for many changes including a baby, college, retirement, and other exciting events. We don’t plan on getting old, having medical issues, or debilitating illnesses. To age well, everyone should plan for future needs. Make sure you have a Durable Power of Attorney (POA) for Property and Healthcare in place. This should be done at the age of 18 and can be regularly updated. The POA is only implemented when you no longer have decisional capacity or are incapacitated. The POA for Property will help pay your bills and the POA for Healthcare will help make healthcare decisions on your behalf should you be unable to do so yourself. Make sure this person is trustworthy and has your best interests at heart. Retirement is the time you will start to spend money. It’s not easy spending money when you are always told to save it. You may have also wanted to have a legacy for your children, but you must take care of yourself first. Your assets and income are to help you live comfortably at home or in a senior community. If you have a lot of assets you will want to protect them. Discuss your estate with an elder law attorney who specializes in asset protection.

Advance Directives (Living Will) offer your POA for Healthcare a roadmap of your wishes. They will then know your preferences should something occur. Long-term care insurance helps pay for care in the home, assisted living, or a higher level of care. There are many options available through a certified long-term care specialist. Decisions will need to be made as you age regarding your housing needs. What type of community do you prefer to live in? Do you want an urban or suburban setting? A community that is busy with lots of activities or a smaller one that is more sedate and home-like? Do you want to bring a pet with you? There are many aspects to consider when you’re thinking about transitioning into a new lifestyle. Contact Elderwerks to help you navigate all of your options.
