SENIOR HOUSING & CARE

Home Health Agency (HHA) Home Health Agencies provide home health care which is available to clients who need professional medical care in the home. Services, usually prescribed by a doctor, are provided by a registered nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech therapist. The HHAs can distribute medication, provide wound care and occupational (OT), physical (PT), speech (ST) therapies. They may also assist with home infusion therapy, medication set up, bath assists, nursing supervision and other skilled services. Some examples would be a client who has just been diagnosed with a new illness or managing a current illness, a recent hospitalization or visit to the emergency room, a change in mobility or a fall or any condition that would benefit from further monitoring by a registered nurse. This level of care is usually covered by private health insurance or Medicare and the care is temporary/short term in nature. The home health agency will work with the physician to establish a plan of care to help the client recover or attain optimal wellness. Home Nursing Agency (HNA) Provide skilled nursing services in the home. Clients/patients needing ongoing skilled nursing beyond the home health agency time parameters allowed by Medicare or health insurance can hire the HNA to provide skilled care. Some examples my include regular administration of injections to insulin-dependent diabetics, ongoing wound care from a surgical incision and insertion of catheters.

Home Nursing Placement Agency (HNPAs) Licensed home nursing placement agencies provide skilled workers to assist in the home, but they are not the employer of the worker. Under this arrangement the HNPA places a skilled worker in the home and receives a “finder’s fee” from either the patient or the worker, or sometimes both. After the worker is placed, the patient/client is then responsible for all aspects of work, including risk or liability arising from the workers actions or injuries. The patient/client is responsible for payment of the worker’s wages, and remittance of state and federal employment taxes, scheduling, and supervision of the worker and any disciplinary issues which may arise. Home Services Agency (HSAs) HSAs provide help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). These services may include assistance with bathing, dressing, haircare, medication reminders, sitter services, meal preparation, companion assist to appointments, shopping and taking care of the home. Services can be arranged on an hourly basis up to a 24-hour live-in program depending on the client’s needs. Services are not covered by Medicare or health insurance but are paid for privately from the client’s own funds or by some long-term care insurance programs. The agency employees are bonded and insured with liability and workers compensation insurance, receive ongoing training and supervision from the agency. Payment of wages to the employee as well as the remittance of all employment taxes is the responsibility of the agency. The agency is responsible for scheduling and the backup of the employee.

TYPES OF SENIOR HOUSING & CARE

Adult Day Services Adult day services provide a broad range of health, nutritional, recreational and social services in settings outside the person’s place of residence. Adult day services do not include residential overnight stays. Assisted Living Community Assisted living is a residence for older people or people with disabilities who require help with some of the routines of daily living as well as access to medical care when needed. They are designed for people who want some degree of independence and access to help as needed. Assisted living generally allows more independence and costs less than nursing home care. The assisted living setting is similar to a personal residence. encompass independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care on the same campus. Some also have memory care available. They often have entrance fee requirements as well as a monthly service fee. Some CCRC’s only allow new members of the community to enter at the independent living level. Others are more flexible and will allow new residents to have some assisted living needs. This type of living is the highest level of living and offer amenities that are in line with what country clubs offer. Group Home These homes are usually private homes with residents living together and receiving care from live-in caregivers. This type of community is built for seniors who enjoy their privacy in a home-like setting. The amenities may include all meals, housekeeping, laundry, some personal care, and medication management. They usually offer assisted living or memory support. Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) or Life Care Community CCRC’s are large campuses that
